2013 Draft

Former Ute Star Lotulelei and former Cougar Ziggy Ansah were both taken in the first round of this year’s draft. Can they both be immediate contributors for their teams?  Can they have long, successful careers in the league?

For the first time in over four decades no running back was taken in the first round. Perhaps even more odd, only one quarterback was taken (and it was not Matt Barkley or Geno Smith). In a quarterback driven league, is this a sign that the league is trending toward emphasizing defense or is it simply a reflection of this year’s talent pool?

Does this lend credibility to claims that college and professional basketball is not always on the level?

Rocky Mountain Cup – Real Salt Lake / Colorado Rapids

Although we at The Dog and Deuce Show pride ourselves on our objectivity, sometimes things happen in the sports world that force out our inner fan. The Rapids – more appropriately named the cRapids – recently released a video (that was obviously thrown together by a very untalented intern) on their website that did just that. Ricky Williams is a name football fans are very familiar with.  His abrupt retirement from the Miami Dolphins in 2004 fueled much speculation, rumor and ire from fans and pundits.  While everybody had an opinion on the issue, few seemed to have their facts straight.  When Williams returned to the NFL three years later, it wasn’t long before he was back in top form, silencing the critics and proving he still belonged on the field.

Trade Deadline / Utah Jazz

The trade deadline has come and gone.  Although there were a lot of rumors surrounding the Utah Jazz and what they might do with big men Al Jefferson and Paul Millsap, in the end Dennis Lindsay and company decided to stand pat and make no deals.

What does this lack of activity mean for the remainder of the Jazz season?  Perhaps more importantly, what does this mean going into next year knowing that both Jefferson and Millsap are free agents?  Is it more important to let one or both walk and let their salaries come off the books or to get something in return?

Listener Matt phoned into theD&D Voicemail and Text Line to tell us what he would have liked to see happen.  Hint: its a deal involving the Clippers and one of the Jazz’s big men.

Los Angeles Lakers

There is little love for the Lakers here in Salt Lake City, but most Jazz fans have been able to put aside their animosity and show respect to the memory of Dr. Jerry Buss.  After his passing last week there was a star studded memorial service held in Los Angeles to pay tribute to the long time Lakers owner.

The Jazz were looking good in the last few weeks of January.  Gordon Hayward was becoming a leader and was taking control in the clutch.  But then Hayward went down and Utah suffered its worst loss in franchise history to the Rockets, and to make matters worse it was in Energy Solutions Arena.

Where do the Jazz go from here?  Do they need to move Al Jefferson?  Can Paul Milsap get back the intensity and emotion that made him so good in past years?  Is it better to shoot for the playoffs or plan for the future?

Aggie fan Ryan Mortensen emailed us to give us his thoughts on Gary Anderson taking the Wisconsin job.  He seems to sum up the collective feeling of the Utah State fan base quite nicely.

Matt Quinney (from Academically Ineligible) and Torrey Ellis both disagree with Allen’s believe that Bronco Mendenhall harbors a quiet but deep animosity and resentment toward the University of Utah.  They both feel that Bronco is indifferent, which is a negative thing.

Aaron Roderick caused quite a commotion when he very publicly announced that he would be leaving Utah to coach at BYU.  A day later he made another announcement: he would be staying at Utah.  While there are certainly factors of this confusing scenario that are being kept quiet (like a possible raise in salary), this whole deal left local college football fans scratching their heads.  What are Ute and Cougar fans supposed to think about this?  Is Roderick good enough to warrant a “bidding” war?  Should Ute fans, as well as the team and coaching staff, even want him back considering this is the second time he has retracted a proclaimed departure?

Manti Te’o

The Manti Te’o “girlfriend” story captured the public like few other sports stories ever have.  We break down what happened and try to deduce who is at fault.

Lance Armstrong

Lance Armstrong has suffered perhaps the worst fall from grace in sports history.  He recently went on the Oprah Winfrey Show and admitted to using performance enhancing drugs.  What does this say about him and the sport of cycling as a whole?

Things got heated early this week when the Celtics took on the Knicks in Madison Square Garden.  Carmelo Anthony had words with Kevin Garnett and after the game actually waited by the Celtics bus to confront Garnett.  This brings to mind the incident early in Anthony’s career when he sucker punched an opponent and then immediately ran away before there could be retaliation.  Does a guy like this really want to take on the intense and fierce Garnett?

Holy War – BYU / Utah Rivalry

With the future of the Holy War in question, most fans dread the thought that the rivalry may end altogether.  For Ute fans, is being in the PAC 12 worth it or would they rather still be in the Mountain West but still playing the Cougars every year?  The college football landscape has changed drastically and it looks like century old rivalries are being sacrificed for big money.
